The Haas GT-20 Lathe - Power and Versatility in a Small Footprint

Haas Automation Inc. manufactures a complete line of CNC lathes designed to meet the needs of modern machine shops ñ both now and long into the future. With the ever-increasing trend towards shorter-run, multiple-op work, small- to medium-sized shops are finding they need a versatile, second-operation machine that can handle a broad range of jobs. The new GT-20 lathe from Haas is designed to meet those needs head on. It delivers high power and a high range of speeds in a small footprint production machine with an equally small price tag.

The compact GT-20 takes up only 8' x 4.5' of floor space, yet offers a generous 11" x 12" maximum capacity, making it the ideal ìchuckerî lathe for shops where space is at a premium. The machine provides a maximum part swing of 13" over the front apron, with an 9.25" swing over the cross slide. The X axis provides 6" of travel with 2400 lb of thrust, and the Z axis provides 12" of travel with 3700 lb of thrust. Rapids are 710 ipm in both axes.

The Haas-designed, 20-hp (peak) vector dual-drive system gives the GT-20 spindle speeds up to 4000 rpm (with hydraulic chuck option), and peak-torque of 154 ft-lb. On-the-fly wye-delta switching delivers higher torque and a wide constant-power band for constant surface speed cuts.

The base configuration of the GT-20 has a maximum speed of 3000 rpm, and does not include a chuck, hydraulic system or tool turret. The machineís A2-6 spindle nose has a 3" bore and accepts a variety of optional through-hole chucks and collets. The cross slide accepts gang-style tooling.

High-productivity options include a hydraulic chucking system (8.3" 3-jaw chuck, rotating union and drawtube), and an 8-position automatic bolt-on style tool turret. The hydraulic chuck option raises the max spindle speed to 4000 rpm, and the turret holds any combination of 0.75" OD or 1" ID tooling, and indexes to the next tool in less than 1 second.

Other options include a 5C collet chuck (with hydraulic chuck option), 2-position quick-change tool posts for 0.75" and 20 mm tools, a high-volume coolant system, user-definable macros, a 3.5" floppy disk drive and expanded memory up to 16 MB.
